How to Make Math Fun for Preschoolers

Making preschool math something kids look forward to learning is a challenge to both educators and parents. Since doing math requires brainpower, many kids might want to give up quickly; however, there are ways preschoolers can learn to love math!

Montessori preschools are dedicated to introducing children to math and other concepts that will encourage them to enjoy learning. That’s exactly what North American Montessori does. We pride ourselves on providing parents and teachers the tools they need to help make the subject of math something preschoolers actually want to do!

Here are some things you can do that can help jumpstart your preschooler’s love for math:

Make Math Part of Everyday Life

If you think math can only be applied to equations, you’re wrong. The beauty of preschool math is that everything can be a good learning opportunity. For example, kids can count how many animals there are in a poster, how many coins there are in their wallet, or how many chocolates are present in their snack bar.

Try to use anything that sparks the interest of kids. Math can easily be integrated into simple everyday tasks like going to the grocery store or cooking. Have your preschooler help count the items in your cart or sort the ingredients on the cutting board.

When kids don’t see the value of learning, they will simply brush it off. Showing kids practical applications of math will allow them to appreciate their purpose and make them realize how necessary it is when they get older.

Play Games

Whether you plan on using board games, card games, memory practices, or puzzles, preschool math will definitely be more fun if it involve games. Kids generally love anything that requires them to do hand-on activities, especially when there is friendly competition involved with their peers. You can organize a simple quiz show and give points to the preschooler who first says the correct answer.

When you send your kid to a Montessori preschool or Montessori daycare, you’ll know that the curriculum involves educational games that are fun and encourages the love of math.

Use Devices

Kids love to play with screens, so use it to your advantage. There are tons of applications and games that will help children understand basic math concepts during early childhood education. Increased math learning is bound to happen when kids are in constant contact with math simulations and games.

Introduce Rewards

One unique feature of the Montessori method is that it utilizes age-appropriate collaborative play, and a key part of these activities is the reward children can receive. This method is an awesome way of encouraging kids to be more driven in learning preschool math. Rewards don’t have to be expensive. It can be as simple as a lollipop, sticker, or extra playtime.

Read Books

Kids love hearing stories. One great thing about books is that it integrates math without kids even noticing it! Key concepts such as addition, counting, measuring, and grouping are presented in a brand new way to encourage kids to learn math vocabulary, sequence, and patterns.

Montessori Preschool Can Make Your Child Love Math

One of the most important steps in learning math that most parents overlook is choosing the right school and education system for their kids. At North American Montessori, you can be sure that your child will not grow up fearing math. Instead, the Montessori method will make them believe that math is one of the easier subjects to master!
